Three True Crime Investigations: Trust, Betrayal, and Obsession in Domestic Violence Cases

Explore the tangled narratives of three violent domestic cases where self-defense claims battled obsessive hatred under intense legal scrutiny. Discover how contradictory forensic evidence and unpredictable witness testimony shaped life-altering verdicts.

Short Summary

  • Virginia Vertitis received a 30-year sentence after the defense argued she shot an abusive boyfriend in self-defense, conflicting with her initial 911 call narrative.
  • Donna Horowitz received a near-life sentence for the multi-shot murder of her ex-husband, Lanny, amidst complex motive arguments rooted in infidelity and finance.
  • Shaina Hubers was convicted twice for killing her attorney boyfriend, Ryan Poston, with her bizarre post-shooting behavior becoming key evidence proving calculated malice over shock or defense.

This report details the critical evidence presented for three separate murder investigations documented by "48 Hours." Readers will gain insight into evidentiary conflicts regarding self-defense assertions versus claims of obsessive motive, particularly analyzing forensic interpretation, witness credibility, and sentencing outcomes across these tragic events.

The root problem leading to all these crimes is the fact, no matter if male or female, doesn't learn to stay on their OWN and be happy with themselves. Looking for their happiness in another person always leads to disaster!

Teaching people how to regulate their emotions is crime prevention. It’s addiction prevention. It’s suicide prevention. It’s generational healing. Bc when we learn to handle our emotions and teach others to do the same, we stop showing up as adults who explode, implode, or shut down at the first sign of discomfort. It’s the foundation of a world where people can disagree without dehumanizing each other, where accountability isn’t seen as an attack, and where conflict doesn’t always mean violence. If we really want a better world to live in, we should lean into emotional education.

If Shayna’s mom had spent more time investing in her daughter’s mental health and her character instead of her accomplishments, she would have had her in therapy years ago. Who calls their mother to come to their boyfriend’s house at 5 am to sit on HIS couch after having had a sleepover??? Her mom is enmeshed and their relationship is emotionally toxic. She never cut that umbilical cord!

I’ve never, in my entire life, heard anyone refer to “having a quickie” as meaning come over for a quick drink 😂 I don’t know how she said that with a straight face

Shayna’s mother really said “she could not imagine” how she could be found guilty. Crazy that people that insane and delusional walk among us.
