YouTube CEO Neal Mohan on AI, Censorship & the Future of Creators
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan Discusses Creator Economy, Culture, and AI Governance
Learn how YouTube balances free expression with global regulation, the evolution of creator monetization, and strategies for governing generative AI content on the world's largest platform.
Short Summary
- YouTube paid out over $70 billion to creators in the last three years, maintaining advertising as the primary monetization method despite premium growth.
- The platform generates "water cooler moments" through live events and creator integration, counteracting algorithmic fragmentation.
- Mohan stresses transparency over outright bans for AI-generated content, focusing on labeling and developing "likeness detection" tools similar to Content ID.
- The discussion frames YouTube as a streaming/content platform more than a typical social media site, which dictates its moderation philosophy.
This conversation dives deep into the operational complexities of running YouTube, covering creator revenue models (including the 55/45 split debate), content regulation across varied global sovereignties, and the future of ownership as generative AI scales. This insight is crucial for understanding platform strategy regarding content ownership and cultural relevance.

Translation = if we deem something as an emergency, we will censor again.
It makes me sad that content creators have to use code words to speak in America or else just self censor so their videos aren’t removed or demonetized
Classic example of someone who says a lot without saying anything.
Politician answers. Noice!😂
Corpo speak is a masterclass in how to make nothing burgers
homie just gave the obama handshake to chamanth and a normal handshake to everyone else
15:06 Mohan: Let me finish JCal: Get to the point
He didn’t apologize or commit to not censoring speech again
Neal Mohan dodged the question about censorship during covid, As a content platform, he has no business censoring any information because it should be left up to the viewer to decide whether they like the content or not. It is sickening, that content platforms take on the role of the "Ministry of Truth", and take on one side of the narrative while suppressing the other side.
The worst thing that could have happened to YouTube.Feel bad for people who have to work under him.Innovation has completely fallen off the cliff. The only thing he can think of is shoving more Ads down people’s throats.
