Every Investor Needs To Understand This Concept - David Friedberg
The Power Law of Value Creation: Why Winners Compound Across Private and Public Markets
Master why success in markets follows a power law, concentrating massive returns in a few winners. Understand why identifying these compounding engines dictates investment success far beyond the initial venture stage.
Short Summary
- Venture returns are overwhelmingly driven by a small number of outliers following a power law distribution.
- Most ultimate value creation for top companies occurs after they become public entities, not just while they are private.
- Indexing the venture market or even the public market index generally results in underperformance compared to identifying the true leaders.
This discussion explores how compounding drives success via power law distributions. It demonstrates that the largest value creation often occurs after a company goes public, emphasizing that the job of a great investor is finding these compounding engines, not passively indexing the market.

Just find the winners guys, simple. 😂
A 12 minute meandering discussion that basically says if you have informational advantage, you will outperform your peers. This axiom has always existed and why the regulators crack down on MNPI.
you reckon chamath would have got Friedburgs point if he'd let him tell his story?
Chamath being honest, the only way to make money in VC is on the fund fee charged to investors in the fund, and repeatedly picking winners and making money on fund growth is really hard. This is why it seems so many people are opening new funds these days. If a VC could consistently pick winners they could just angel invest their own capital and wouldn’t need a fund or a fee.
Chamath has a lot on his mind lately!! It’s written all over his face!! I watch regularly and he has some big decisions he is concerned about recently! I could be wrong but something stressful is happening with him! Hope you get through it C! Love your opinions on many topics! Also thanks for the entertainment ! My wife & I enjoy all of you guys!!
Uhh is he seriously telling people “just pick the winners??” I mean i guess this may be needed to counter dave ramsey but jeez this is obvious stuff
Nassim Taleb would tear this to pieces. These guys hit the jackpot of randomness and don't understand it.
