AI Capability Shifts, China’s Energy Mobilization, and US Policy Volatility

Determine how diminished LLM leaps (GPT-5) contrast with China's aggressive infrastructure race, and learn why oscillating US industrial policies—from aggressive tariffs to inconsistent energy subsidies—are creating instability for long-term tech investment strategy.

Short Summary

  • GPT-5 exhibited incremental gains, suggesting LLM benchmark saturation might be nearing for current iteration speeds.
  • China demonstrates a massive, state-directed advantage in AI infrastructure, particularly through rapidly expanding energy generation capacity.
  • US policy suffers cycling instability, evident in shifting support for solar/wind subsidies while hindering nuclear R&D maturity.
  • Apple faces deep criticism for prioritizing massive shareholder buybacks ($700B+) over crucial, competitive AI product development.

This discussion dives deep into the current state of AI iteration, contrasting OpenAI’s measured release with China’s industrial and energy mobilization. The hosts debate the US response framework, balancing the necessity for federal guidance on AI against the chaos introduced by inconsistent economic policies like tariffs and subsidy reversals.

Ben? Really? Is this an Israel first podcast now? I was here for economics and tech talk. Not this. Hope friedberg can have his own podcast one day. Always appreciate his thoughts on matters.

I saw no reasonable response to Friedburgs subsidy argument of solar and wind having a detrimental effect on nuclear other than subsidize nuclear also. He also noted that upon every government failure they double down and make it twice as big.

I agree with David. We subsidized wind and solar at the cost of nuclear,IMO.
