Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi on self-driving's future, changing business model, job displacement
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi on Autonomous Vehicles, Capital Allocation, and Future Distribution
Learn how Uber integrates dozens of self-driving partners, navigates the high-stakes debate between LiDAR and vision-only systems, and plans to deploy capital amid rapid growth and a major shareholder return program.
Short Summary
- Uber manages a hybrid network, partnering with over 20 autonomous system providers globally, including Waymo and Chinese leaders.
- The company assesses AV technology based on strict safety cases, contrasting high-redundancy approaches (LiDAR) with software-intensive, map-agnostic strategies (camera-only).
- Uber intends to maintain its asset-light distribution advantage, leveraging its demand network to attract external fleet owners, though it may take balance sheet risk initially.
- The firm views capital deployment as an "and" strategy: aggressive investment in future tech (like AV) alongside significant shareholder returns ($20B buyback).
This discussion clarifies Uber’s multi-pronged approach to future transportation, detailing how their massive demand network will support asset-heavy partners in mobility, delivery, and even emerging 3D transport solutions like eVTOLs. Understanding these dynamics explains why Uber is prioritizing platform monetization over owning large, expensive robotic fleets today.

He knows he's screwed. That's why sold a bunch of the stock
Anybody seen Uber and Lyft rides are costing more lately. 30-35 Minutes ride to airport is now over 75$ in twin cities
Every uber driver I spoke to in Austin said their revenue was devastated by the introduction of Waymo
As Peter Thiel said, don’t bet against Elon.
They should have brought an Uber driver up on stage to see what they think about these comments.
Interesting how mobility is going to change over the next few years
What is the Churn at Uber, for drivers nowadays?....
He knows uber is done, it was a very good run though
So I other words they are screwed. They wanna get a broker fee on autonomous cars, they're not needed. He's pumping his own stock to sell the rest of his ownership. Even the partnership with Tesla and semi will be Shor lived I think. They had a good run. 👀😎
Sold all my uber shares and loaded more tsla shares.. easy decision!
