My mum was nearly one of his first victims. She was 15 and lived just south of Sydney. Her and her friend, who was 17, went to Sydney for the day and missed the train to come home. Hitchhiked and ended up in his car. Mum told me about how he kept travelling west instead of south and was being very quiet. Mum and her friend kept looking at each other in the mirror and signalling to try and jump out of the car at the next lights. Fortunately because he went through a red light and was speeding, he ended up being pulled over by police. Both of them were frightened and the police found rope, ties, a shovel and other things in the boot. Safe to say my mum and her friend were given a lecture by the officers about hitch hiking and never did it again. I’m not entirely sure what happened afterwards but years later mum saw his face on the news for these backpacker murders and recognised him instantly. So awful to think about what they went through!
I don't know if your aware, but Ivan Milats nephew, Mathew Milat, is also a killer. He was very proud of his Uncle Ivan.
i hitched around Australia in the early 80's... travelling great distances ( it's big country ) and used to hitch the Hume Hwy for the fruit picking work in Victoria, from up North. I swear this bloke stopped to offer me a ride, i got the ick from him, and his grubby white ute. Right behind him, a semi pulled up and flashed his lights at me, so i walked up to the truck and he said i'll run you through to Shepparton ( in Victoria), so i got in. The driver said to me, i have a girl your age, so i'm telling you what i would tell her. 'Don't get in cars. You can easily hide a car, you can't hide a semi. A car can go down any bush track and you're toast. We're on tight time schedules so stick to the run. We also can jump on the radio and hook you up with a safe ride if you're going further than us.' I never forgot that. Was it him in that ute? i don't know for sure, but i never got a ride in a car again.
Being paralyzed doesn't always equate to being numb. Which is so scary
I live in Australia and it was great to see you covering one of our biggest crimes, i do think Ivan did it alone, very fit man and just terrifying. His nephew killed someone in the same forest so definitely do a follow up story!
Aussie here. This case was the end of innocence for us! In fact, it was so close to me. I was hitching to Confest with a girlfriend on the very same day, same hours as Gabor Neugebauer. I still feel haunted by their deaths, I don't think I'll ever get over it! Inserting my own story doesn't take away their tragic loss!! Yet, we can learn by it....... I'm so sorry to ALL THE FAMILY & FRIENDS xxxxxxx
This was the EXACT reason why I didn't do a backpacking gap year in Australia. This rocked Britain... 🥺💔🇬🇧
Been here since a lil before the pandemic started, our girl Annie has just gotten better & better at what she does! I rarely comment, but came to say that your platform is my favorite. We love & appreciate you & all that you do to bring awareness 🤍
Hi Annie I'm an Aussie and I was 18 when they started finding the bodies. This case horrified all of Australia. I think someday they will find many more bodies that were victims of Milat. Thank you for covering this story
This serial killer was the very definition of a true psychopath.
