Each held onto the photographs of the child, children or sisters they had lost. In death they held those photos as tightly as they would have held onto their hands in life. The agony they have endured since February was etched on their faces and so clear in their eyes it was almost unbearable to witness. Not all the mothers were able to speak with us, but they wished to be part of the interview. Some sat in silence looking at their child’s image, others sobbed behind us as they heard the testimonies of those who, at that moment, had the strength to speak about their loss. Their children died on the first day of the US-Iran war, February 28, when American missiles hit their school. The US authorities have offered differing explanations for what went on, and launched an investigation.
