7:35 What Ben is failing to realize here is that your grandpa working a hard job riveting (which is probably much more mentally rewarding because physical work is like that for a lot of men) could actually afford to support a family of 7 and pay off his mortgage, all on a single income, while his wife took care of children and the home. You can't even get close to that on an average construction wage in almost any country today. Especially not in a developed nation. The cost of living for basics is higher, and the ratio of salary to the cost of a house is between 2-3 times higher than the ratio our grandpa was facing. Meaning you have to have more money saved for a deposit and a longer time to pay off a house. Mobile phones and uber eats aren't arguments for a better time to live in Ben. Especially mobile phones. It is essentially compulsory for adults to have one nowadays to live in society. If you don't you couldn't even access most of the services provided nowadays. This also means you have a phone bill, essentially compulsory. Try riding a bus or applying for a job without at least a mobile phone or laptop with an internet connection nowadays. What makes life for people worth living is an upward trajectory. Something our grandpa had, but I don't think many/most people feel as though they have today.

McDonald's is almost always above 10$ after tax for a large combo now? That's when you really know someone screwed up the economy.

How stupid do they think we are? I'm 30, single and no kids. I work 40 hours a week bring in around $2000ish a month working retail and going to school. My rent jumped from $700/month to $1300/month in 2 years. My rate of pay hasn't changed except for 10 cents here and there. I'm still living in the cheapest place possible. I've been saving whatever money I can every month for a house and now that may not be possible for a long time if at all. I've had to pick up Uber to make ends meet and that mean pretty much no down time and if I take a little vacation or anything i have to double down on work. For a single family 2-3 bedroom home, single story with a small back/front yard....it goes for almost $300k!!!!! That's in a very small town. We aren't even close to anything touristy or fun. Please explain to me how inflation is down and wages have gone up?

When this discussion comes up I always remember the scene in the movie 1900 about Italian land owners and the rise of fascism that when a little boy gets paid for doing something for the owner, he comes back all smiles and happy to his "collectivist" workers dining hall. The leader takes the coin, slams it hard on the table and says, "Now it belongs to ALL of us!" The little boy looked heartbroken. A harbinger of the nightmare of 20th century authoritarian slaughter and abuse.

I wish it were the 1950s, for all sorts of reasons. I'd happily give up the ability to buy all the shit I don't need.

I do like the 50's cars.Those were beautiful classics.Durable,the average man could work on them.They have a timeless quality to them.Forget all the electronic features;they are why it cost a fortune to maintain today's cars.Even better-no smog requirements.
