Skepticism Over Upcoming Sequels, Literary Adaptations, and the Decline of Practical Effects

Uncover the critical failures in modern mystery storytelling that ruin major franchises, and learn why reliance on CGI drains the excitement from blockbuster cinema compared to classic practical stunt work.

Short Summary

  • The second Knives Out film, Glass Onion, is rejected as a narrative cheat because its conclusion was intentionally non-discoverable by the audience.
  • Modern literary adaptations, like the upcoming Wuthering Heights, risk brutally butchering classic novels by inserting contemporary, lust-driven tropes.
  • Excessive use of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) eliminates the perception of risk, making films feel less exciting than older movies relying on real-world stunts.

This segment surveys previews for three highly anticipated (or dreaded) upcoming films, criticizing formulaic sequel structures, potential thematic agendas, and the shift away from practical filmmaking techniques established in classics like Raiders of the Lost Arc.

I think "forgettable" is the defining characteristic of most modern movies.

I love when Ben talks about movies or musicals. I've even seen it where people who don't like Ben enjoy his reviews😂

F1 was probably the most entertaining movie this year. Basic story line, no gratuitous sex and violence, minimal foul language and great camera work.

“I’m all CGI out“. Ben, I reached that point about 10 years ago. Welcome to the club.

I agree with you on all counts. Definitely not worth paying the price at fhe theater or watching it when it comes out on Netflix or Hulu! It is comforting to know that young people like yourself feel the same as an old lady like me! You are the best in all that you do Ben.

Ben's layout of the problem with the Knives Out flicks is a good nod to Dorothy Sayers's Rules For Detective Stories!

Well the good news about Wuthering Heights if you don't like this version is that there are already about 50 adaptions out there.

"CGI'd out" is absolute the case for me.

At this point Hollywood makes movies for themselves, because I don't know anyone clamoring for this garbage.
