The $1 Trillion War Machine: Budget Inertia vs. Military Strategy

Discover the entrenched political and industrial reasons why the U.S. military budget consistently exceeds $1 trillion, locking the nation into ongoing conflicts. Learn how this massive investment fails to translate into actual strategic advantage on the modern battlefield.

Short Summary

  • The Pentagon systematically pivots toward a "wartime footing," driven by political inertia and contractor incentives, not national strategy.
  • Spending has reached $1.2 to $1.3 trillion, creating a rigid system where lobbying reinforces outdated procurement plans (e.g., F-35, new carriers).
  • High-dollar technology often proves irrelevant when contemporary conflicts demand lower-tech, rapidly deployable solutions.

This discussion with William Herung centers on how runaway military spending functions as corporate welfare, crowding out crucial domestic budgetary flexibility and ensuring the perpetuation of military primacy efforts.

*_"War is a racket._*_ It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives."_ *- USMC Maj. Gen. SMEDLEY D. BUTLER* _"I spent thirty-three years...as a member of this country's most agile military force, _*_the Marine Corps._*_ I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle-man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism."_ *- USMC Maj. Gen. SMEDLEY D. BUTLER*

Authoritarians need a conflict with someone, whether domestic or foreign, to distract from failing government.

I was a contract auditor for the Dept. of Defense from 2003 to 2011. Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA). I audited small contractors (<$5M) and large contractors. I resigned in disgust. The fraud, abuse and corruption is INSTITUTIONALIZED. Auditors are pressured to find NOTHING. Oh! $50,000 obviously fraudulent costs? "No. Don't waste your time. It's too small for us to worry about." $500,000 obviously fraudulent costs? "Oh no! We don't have the time and there're just too big to fuck with." If you tow this line, you get ahead at DCAA. Piece-of-cake GS-12/13/14 jobs.

DOGE never bothered to look into the Pentagon. Instead they chose to cut things like pediatric cancer research, meals on wheels, etc.

There is a reason America is the only developed country that doesn't have healthcare or maternity leave and it is not because of a lack of a tax base......
