The Interrupted History of the 32-Hour Workweek

Discover why the 32-hour workweek seemed inevitable in the 1930s but stalled for 90 years. Learn how political deals and profit motives sidelined labor's demand for increased leisure time, despite technological capacity.

Short Summary

  • [00:00:00] The US Senate passed a 30-hour workweek bill in 1933, supported by FDR initially, showing deep historical consensus for reduced hours.
  • [00:05:55] President Roosevelt abandoned the 30-hour bill, trading legislative action for voluntary business cooperation regarding antitrust reforms.
  • [00:07:46] Policy focus shifted from expanding leisure to a "hustle" mentality, prioritizing wealth accumulation over productivity gains.

This discussion tracks the 100-year labor movement for shorter hours, culminating in the 1933 push for a 30-hour week, and analyzes why corporate profit motives ultimately prevented further progress despite clear technological capacity for leisure.

I know like three days after I die they’ll introduce UBI, a 20 hour work week and kickass rollercoasters to replace all national highways.

The worst part of the 8 hour work day is when you have a forced half hour or full hour unpaid lunch so you end up actually having an 8.5 or 9 hour day before the commute

There are a lot of people that leave at 1 every day. It's the managers and execs that insist on 40+ hr work weeks.

The fact that productivity has doubled but real wages have only increased by 20% without a change to the workweek… Needless to say we’ve been robbed blind—not only of our wages, but, even more importantly, of our time, which means our life, at least a significant part of it, the experiences we could have and share with people we love, ventures that we could start with that time and increased wages. It’s time this system that serves the few is taken to serve the many.

The 30 hour workweek would transform the social contracts, strengthening communities and families, and feeding capital directly into local economies.

We could easily reduce the workweek by half and 95% of the people would be much happier for it and see a huge increase in living standards
