Tim Dillon, Ted Cruz SHRED Kimmel FCC Suspension
Trump Administration Pressure Spurs Criticism Over FCC Threats to Media Outlets
Analyze how direct government threats against broadcasters affect corporate speech decisions and examine the reaction from high-profile conservative figures like Ted Cruz and comedians like Tim Dillon.
Short Summary
- The FCC Commissioner threatened ABC/NextStar with regulatory action regarding a merger just before Kimmel's suspension, suggesting government interference in speech.
- Senator Ted Cruz criticized FCC Chairman Brennan Carr’s conduct as "dangerous as hell," comparing the threat to Mafia intimidation tactics.
- Commentators argue this pressure is designed to chill speech across all media, leading to corporate capitulation, regardless of legitimate business reasons.
- The discussion links current events to historical precedents, noting how media consolidation (50 companies down to 5 controlling 90% of media) facilitates authoritarian control.
This episode dissects the political fallout following Jimmy Kimmel's suspension, focusing intensely on the use of regulatory power (FCC) to influence media content. Speakers analyze whether this is purely a business decision or a coordinated government intimidation tactic aimed at silencing critics, and explore the implications for future free expression in a highly consolidated media landscape.

Trump: "They can't say bad things about me, that's not Free Speech."
Ted Cruz's mob boss accent feels like getting punched in the ear
It's not about the fascism but the friends we made along the way
Saagar is the kind of guy who thinks he’s smarter than he really is
Gotta love The Daily Show for their ability to stand up
No one (that I'm aware of) has pointed out the blatant hypocrisy in plain view. Kimmel is not a reporter as Trump said, he is a comedian and TV host airing his opinion. Wasn't it not that long ago when FOX hosts were defending their shows by saying that they were entertainers and not reporters and so should not be held to a higher level of scrutiny and reporting.
Saagar is actually loving this tbh. He's got no principals.
It's almost as though Ted Cruz's soul snuck back into his body for just a minute there. It forgot it had been sold.
What a country when you have to glaze the president on TV 24/7 because words hurt
Saagar, Cruz realizes that at some point the rabbits will get the gun back.
