π¨ DEEP RED state suddenly IN PLAY for 2026
Rob Sand on Flipping Iowa and Governing Beyond Party Lines
Discover why Iowa may not be the guaranteed "red state" everyone assumes, based on recent statewide performance indicators. Learn candidate Rob Sand's strategy for reforming a political system designed to divide and control voters.
Short Summary
- Statewide voting data suggests Iowa remains highly competitive ("purple"), narrowly missing a 3-3 split in 2022 statewide races.
- Governor Reynolds faces historically high disapproval ratings (seven straight quarters) due to controversial policies like expensive, unsupervised school vouchers.
- Sand champions systemic reform, advocating for ending special privileges for the two major parties to foster genuine problem-solving.
Rob Sand, the Democratic State Auditor, argues that recent state policy failuresβfrom economic stagnation to educational changesβreveal deep voter frustration. This interview outlines his case for challenging the status quo by focusing on good governance reforms rather than partisan loyalty.

If Sand wins, he would become the first Democrat to win the Governor's race since 2006!
As someone who descends from generations of Iowans, this is exactly who we would want representing us. Bravo.
I love that phrase: not bluer, not redder, but truer, better.ππΊπ²
I donated to Rob Sand a couple months ago, because though Iβm from a different state, we need more Progressive, pro-working and middle class candidates like him.
This guy is 100% correct when he describes the paradigm of the duopoly. Democracy shouldn't be a choice between only 2 parties. Open primaries and ranked-choice voting would usher in a wider selection of candidates. One shouldn't have to identify with a political party in order to run for office.
Iβm very happy that Rob is drawing on Iowaβs actual history - weβve been a battleground state for a while now, electing Obama twice. Iβm sad that MAGA politics have taken over but itβs time for a change.
LET'S GO BLUE IOWA!!!πππ
From The Netherlands ... Great to listen to a smart politician and auditor when there are so many stupid, inhumane, and dishonest people around. I hope Iowans will vote for good, even great governance. Rob Sand seems to be the right person to 'serve his constituents', as it should be.
7:47 I 100% agree, for the US as a whole and not just any one state.
The real problem is the elected officials pick their voters instead of the voters picking their officials.
