After the gym I just sit in my hot car for 15min before I drive off
Amazing video, Bryan. I’ve been following your protocol myself — I’m 24, and thanks to the sauna, training, and full-stack lifestyle, my heart rate markers have transformed. But the most meaningful part? I’m now guiding my 58-year-old father through the same journey. There’s nothing more powerful than sharing longevity and health with someone you love. Reversing age together is the greatest gift in the world
I’m Finnish-American and grew up taking saunas. We sauna while pregnant, with our newborn babies, etc! It’s part of our culture. My husband finished building a sauna in our backyard and we absolutely love it. We have a stove inside with hot rocks to pour water on to create steam!
The reason it was tough is because he started at 200 degrees for 20 minutes... you need to work your way up to that. For Beginners start at 175 degrees F for 15 minutes.
Glad to see that the sauna finally gets a chance in the protocol! Would be interesting to see how an ice bath immediately afterwards, which is a common practice (please shower first, especially in public), might influence the results. The idea of cooling the head and balls sound very logical, makes sense to protect those. Checking the materials of the towel, sauna-hat etc. is a good point, will do that. Thank you all for the update and have a nice day.
I asked my friend who grew up in Sweden and Finland about their sauna practice, she said that the cultural wisdom is that one sauna cycle consists of 20 min in the sauna (~200 degrees F) followed cooling down via a cold plunge, cold shower, or rolling in the snow. She mentioned that people typically do multiple "cycles" of sauna+cooldown, typically from 1-3 cycles. She said that you never would do sauna without cooling down afterwards. The wisdom passed down from her parents is that you want the heat to activate the health benefits of being hot, but you need to then cool your body down so that you don't strain your system by staying hot too long. In the video, you mentioned that starting your sauna practice really drained you, and I'm wondering if cooling down after the sauna would help with that. I was wondering if you could ask Dr. Malin to dig deeper into the literature to see if the studies included this cool down protocol and whether's there's any scientific validity to my friend's cultural understanding of sauna. I would love if you could update the community about what you find. Thanks so much!
