Season one had a ton of surprising character progression that made them all so endearing.
Hopper knew that the "body" was fake because if it had been real, it would have an "Y-incision" on the torso/chest from the autopsy, which it did not.

I love how quickly everybody is on board with what’s going on. Hopper easily could be the apathetic/skeptical police chief, and Jonathan could continue just thinking his mom is crazy. But everybody know SOMETHING is going on, and they’re investigating from different angles. I love it!
