Description

Achara & Ashleigh watch Jarhead, a gritty and grounded war drama that follows a Marine sniper through the emotional strain, boredom, and psychological tension of the Gulf War. Instead of focusing on traditional battlefield action, the film dives into the mental toll of waiting, watching, and surviving in a conflict where the enemy is rarely seen but always felt. Directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, 1917), the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Donnie Darko, Prisoners), Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman, An Education, Shattered Glass), Jamie Foxx (Ray, Collateral, Django Unchained), Chris Cooper (Adaptation, Seabiscuit, The Bourne Identity), Lucas Black (Tokyo Drift, Friday Night Lights, Legion), Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker, Flight, Boardwalk Empire), Dennis Haysbert (24, Major League, Heat), Evan Jones (8 Mile, The Book of Eli, Den of Thieves), Rini Bell (Bring It On, Road Trip, The Terminal), and John Krasinski (The Office, A Quiet Place, Jack Ryan). This is an incredibly accurate representation. So is Generation Kill.

57:53 is such an important moment, the Vietnam Vets never got their 'Welcome Home' so he was damn sure he made those boys felt welcome when they got back.

Jake Gyllenhaal was convinced he had blown his audition, especially after several months passed and he hadn't heard back from Sir Sam Mendes. An impassioned message Gyllenhaal left on Mendes's voicemail swung the decision in his favour.

I am a combat veteran and while this movie definitely doesn't show everything. It nails the isolation that everyone feels

this is such a good representation of how your mental can change. i was only in the desert for two/three months and in those months a lot of us went as they call “internal” so them “crashing” out daily is SOOO real and valid. a lot of marines literally train just to go to war. Specially combat jobs. That is why we join so when we can’t we feel like we didn’t fulfill our purpose.

What I love about the ending is how it really shows the difference between everyones background and what they go on to do after their enlistment. Someone can become famous, a no body, a simple family man or a broker. But despite how far they go they will always remember what and where they were in the Marines

The film ends in 2003 with footage of the Iraq war being played on the TV in Swofford's home and also shows Staff Sergeant Sykes also serving in that conflict.

I love his hand shaking, holding the receiver in anticipation of getting their first kill. I love that little subtle detail.
