"Gordy's gone. I'll be out front. Good luck." That almost brings me to tears every time. Shugart knows he's about to die, but he's going down swinging. One of the most authentic and heartbreaking lines in any war movie, ever. So much respect for both of them.
"I can't believe HE is in this" is what everyone said every 5 minutes of this movie. This is one of the most amazingly stacked casts of all time.
Tom Seizmore nailed the portrayal of Col. McKnight. McKnight was widely recognized for his level-headedness and unshakable demeanor, traits that defined his leadership style. McKnight's calmness under fire and ability to inspire confidence were not anomalies; they reflected the dependable, methodical approach he was known for throughout his military career.
I was one of the first units in Mogadishu. Fortunately, it was about ten months before these events. That was probably the worst place I've ever been to. The depiction here is pretty accurate. What the film couldn't relay was the intense smell of death and decay. As a member of the USAF, I was very happy that the Army and Marines were there. While nothing newsworthy happened while I was there, danger was everywhere. Two things really stood out to me: I could see that Mogadishu was once a beautiful city. It saddened me to see what it had turned into. The religious conviction was still strong in starving people. We had offered some Somalis our MREs and their primary concern was if it was pork... On a humorous note, after one bite, they passed it on to the next guy... our food was too gross for a starving man to eat.

But they did their jobs, they didn't leave those men to die alone and they fought with everything they had. Shugart telling the pilot goodluck was just him saying ill drop as many as i can, i hope you survive.
You guys mentioned a lot about how the troops were very unprepared and underestimated the situation, but the reality is, this was supposed to be a routine mission. You have to remember, this was not the first time out there. In the weeks prior, US troops conducted multiple short snatch and grab missions like this. If you listen during the first few minutes of the mission, as soon as the prisoners are dragged out of the building General Garrison says "That's it, we got em". The mission was over at that point, all they had to do was come back to base. What messed it up entirely and dragged the fight out over the course of a day was the first, and then second helicopters being shot down. At that point, it becomes a rescue mission. The troops definitely did not underestimate which is why they all were nervous before going out there. The Bakara market (area where the mission took place) is like the wild west and they knew that
