When this movie first came out, Black Americans were making breakdown videos of this movie like crazy!! 😂😂
This movie had us in a chokehold when it came out!
Fun fact: The song at the end credits is called “Tyrone” by Erykah Badu released in 97’. Original lyrics being, “… you betta’ call Tyrone.” They brought her back to re-record the lyrics for the end credits and she says, “they done cloned Tyrone”. Which is actually really cool.
They cloned the people that can perpetuate a specific stereotype and are also influencers in the community.
Henrietta Lacks cells have been used in well over 70% of drug research and discoveries in the world. She went in for treatment for cervical cancer. A doctor recognized her unusual cells and essentially harvested them, without consent. The doctor is now world renowned for finding the first immortalized human cell. Henrietta died from cervical cancer at 31. She nor her family were compensated for years but an undisclosed settlement was reached with Thermo-Fisher in 2023
This movie is DEEPER than what people think that’s why it doesn’t get talked about that much because it’s some truth in everything whether you believe or not.
Fun fact: this movie was released during the strike (so they couldn’t promote it) & simultaneously with Jamie Foxx being called a clone when spotted after recovering from a brain bleed/ aneurysm
One thing I appreciated the most about this movie is the way it showed how “nothing really changed” through the different clothes, lingo, and phones all from different eras.
Honestly, good on you guys for looking into the director’s background and putting that together about the Tuskegee Experiment.
That elevator scene in the church with them singing was unscripted lol and John had to try keep a straight face
