I've always felt bad for Aang, because he had to live as the last of his people with a responsibility that he didn't choose to accept, and he doesn't get to choose, he's forced to be everyone's savior.
I like how they have Aang and Zuko’s backstories in the same episode. It shows that they are actually not so different from one another.
Basically, Zuko's father banished him forever. The Avatar at that point was considered to have been nonexistent because he hadn't been seen in over 100 years. So it would be like you can't come back to your home until you bring me a cave bear or direwolf or something like that.
My favorite line from book 1 is "Sokka: I'm too young to die! Fisherman: I'm not but I still don't wanna!". 😂🤣
Zuko apologized to his father and got burned. Zuko apologized to Iroh and got forgiven.
I think it's important to note that Zuko's dad sent him on an impossible mission. Remember, the Avatar hadn't been seen for a hundred years and many people had tried to find him and failed. Zuko's dad just wanted him gone and out of the way. Such a horrible person..
Episode 12 is a kind of turning point, where the show becomes less cartoonish and begins to touch on more serious themes. From then on, things only get more interesting
The back-and-forth storytelling is specifically designed to help you understand the duality of Zuko and Aang. They both have similar backstory. They’re like parallels with one another.
imo, like the people in the story, even as an audience we sometimes forget that Aang was still human and a kid, which meant he would make mistakes, have emotions, wanted to play, etc. Even Zuko was complex and not simply an antagonist. I appreciate the series leaned into those complexities and didn’t oversimplify (all) the characters
Episode 11 was overplayed as a rerun on Nickelodeon because it was one of the only bottle episodes in the series, so some people in the fandom hate it. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it. Episodes 12-13 are my fav from Book 1
