Benedict Cumberbatch said he wanted to play Smaug more than anyone because his dad read him The Hobbit when he was 6. He actually said that this is technically a secondhand performance because he based it on how his dad acted it out when he read the book to him. But he was given even MORE by Peter Jackson when he asked Ben to also voice Sauron The Necromancer. Also Benedict made the absolute right call (and yes it was his idea not Peter Jackson’s) to play Smaug not just with his voice, but with performance capture. His body and facial expressions gave so much life to Smaug and made him so much more terrifying. And Peter made the right call when he had Benedict read his lines in black speech as Sauron backwards because when they played them forwards it sounded unnatural and very intimidating.
As Gimili said: We dwarves are natural sprinters!
*”His teeth are swords, his claws are spears, his scales are shields, his tail is a thunderbolt, his wings are a hurricane, and his breath is death”.* That is how Smaug is exactly described in the book, and that’s exactly what Smaug feels like in this movie. If you watch the special features of this movie (and you absolutely should they’re amazing) you’ll learn that by the time Tolkien wrote The Hobbit dragons were not really thought of as scary or as formidable in fantasy literature. He wanted a dragon that felt like they used to be thought of. As unstoppable forces of nature and incredibly cunning, psychopathic, and nearly unstoppable enemies to fight against. And he absolutely achieved it with Smaug. For me he is the greatest evil dragon in all of western fiction.
Fun Fact: Bard’s two daughters are played by Mary and Peggy Nesbitt, the real-life daughters of James Nesbitt who plays Bofur ( the dwarf with the hat). Also, talk show host, Stephen Colbert and his family makes cameo appearances as Lake-Town residents. Peter Jackson also reprised his cameo as the carrot munching resident of Bree who was also in the Fellowship of the Ring years ago!!!
The way they had Bombur run in the scenes where the dwarves are running for the house is they put the actor who played him in running shoes, instead of heavy dwarven boots!!😂😂😂
Scenes with Smaug really elevated this movie
Benedict Cumberbatch as the Dragon's voice is GOLD. Also, reminds me of his character Khan from "Star trek into darkness". its quite similar.
I love it how the auto captions name Legolas as "Legal Ass". I mean ..
You edited out the coldest line in the movie: "I am Fire, I am.... DEATH!"
The actors said that doing the barrels was very fun. There’s a scene where if u pause it you can see Aiden turner (kili) smiling
