you're way ahead of most people on your character analysis, no wonder you already love the show -- character development is where the show shines the most!

The whistle always saddens me a bit. Let me explain: it is a whistle in the shape of a bison, and it calls Appa, a ski-bison. There is only one culture this really could have come from, the air nomads. I think that is the reason why Aang couldn't resist buying it. He doesn't explain this because he is cut off by Katara stating she would manage the money from now on (and from a writers point of view he is cut off to 1. not make the scene boring by a character explaining what it does, as show, don't tell is far better, and 2. letting him explain would ruin the surprise in the end.) Anyway, I do think it is a relic from the Air nomads, and although they were not very materialistic, and Aang isn't either, having a little piece of his culture would be enough for him to pay. But then you hear it is only one copper, even though it is a relic from a nation that was destroyed, to the people now it is just a whistle that doesn't make a sound and can't attract any bison because they are extinct as well! So something old from your culture is now deemed almost worthless...

One of the things I love about the world of ATLA is that they have many non-bending characters that hold their own against benders in a realistic way. With training and dedication, they can learn how to counter a benders abilities, as we saw with the pirates. They used their wit, their tools, and martial arts to control the hands and feet of the benders.

My biggest advice when you finish season 3 is to go back and watch this again. Doesn't even have to be immediately. There are so many details that I want to point out, without giving spoilers, but honestly the best part of watching is going back and watching again and seeing how the details make more sense.

I love how much more of Iroh’s character we get to see across these three episodes.

Bit of a minor inconsistency, but not totally. Aang doesn't actually go into the Spirit World in part 1. What happens is that his spirit was separated from his body, making him an invisible astral projection. I say it's not totally an inconsistency because you can make the argument that Aang misunderstood the context and assumed the Spirit World exists in the same plane as the material world but is just invisible. The actual first time he enters the Spirit World is when he talks to Avatar Roku and goes into that completely different environment.

"How I let this happen? It is The Avatar's duty to protect nature" I know the series wasn't meant to be a traty of biology, but I love the idea that Aang was not trained in any other matters that are not bending and the spiritual concept of the balance and has to figure his own concept of balance as he discovers the world. True, Fire Nation (and other entities) are damaging nature because of the spiritual disconnection with their environment, but it should be noted there are some plants and entire ecosystems that require forest fires to thrive and reproduce. In our world, some species of pines can only reproduce with the help of fire (their thick cones, glued shut with strong resin, need fire to open up). And the balance of any ecosystem includes population control (through death, disasters and disease). So, balance is not the same as "avoiding any destruction, damage or discomfort"; it's to let natural cycles to flow (and don't overwork them with human activities). As a canadian natural resources link indicates: "disturbance is part of the natural cycle of the forest and most often helps the forest to renew itself. [...] Natural disturbance should not be confused with deforestation." Sources: https://natural-resources.canada.ca/forest-forestry/insects-disturbances/forests-need-fires-insects-diseases https://www.nationalforests.org/our-forests/light-and-seed-magazine/how-trees-survive-and-thrive-after-a-fire Nice reaction, see you in the next one.
