Description

Beneath a pyramid at Hawara lies one of the most significant and least discussed megalithic structures in Egypt - a complex Ben van Kerkwyk connects directly to the legendary Egyptian labyrinth described by ancient historians as surpassing even the pyramids in magnificence. The physical evidence is extraordinary. A single quartzite box estimated by Petrie at approximately 110 tons. Roofing beams in the 80 ton range. Blocks throughout the passages and trapdoors running from 20 to 50 tons. Ben draws the construction parallel immediately - this is the same caliber of megalithic work found in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid, and the same stone type and construction style visible in the Osireion at Abydos - one of the most mysterious structures in all of Egypt. What Petrie's excavation revealed was a site that had been systematically destroyed over centuries. The ruins initially associated with the labyrinth turned out to be the remains of a quarrying village - the local industry for generations had been breaking up and removing the stone from this site. Beneath those village ruins, Petrie found a vast foundation of smooth plaster on which the original pavement had been laid - extending across an area of approximately 1000 feet long and 800 feet wide. Ben lets Petrie's own measurement speak for itself. On that footprint could be placed the Great Hall of Karnak, the temples of Mut and Khonsu, both great temples of Luxor, and still have room remaining. The labyrinth was not simply a wonder of Egypt. It was the largest structure ever built there - and it was quarried into near total oblivion before modern archaeology arrived to ask what it actually was.

That pyramid is completely flooded - it's right next to the canal. The canal cuts right through the middle of what would have been the area of the labyrinth. There is a heap of broken pottery shards scattered amongst all the mounds of dirt. Shards everywhere. Mounds everywhere. I've been inside that pyramid, down into the entrance tunnel, until you hit the water .. it's dark black water and you literally cannot go any further.
