An Asteroid Tsunami, Cave Art DNA, and Randall's New School

The biggest announcement of the week was accidental. Four science stories worth knowing about. A team at the Max Planck Institute extracted human DNA directly from a painted cave wall for the first time, sampling panels including hand stencils at Tresviso Cave and the red bison ceiling at Altamira, with the breakthrough sample sealed under calcite at Escorial Cave in Portugal. The significance: it is now theoretically possible to connect specific rock art to specific individuals. The Silver Pit crater in the North Sea, long disputed as either an impact site or a salt collapse feature, has been confirmed as an asteroid impact that triggered a 330-foot tsunami, good news for the broader catastrophism research community. Ancient DNA from Siberian hunter gatherer cemeteries has pushed the earliest confirmed evidence of plague back roughly 200 years to around 5,500 years ago, predating cities, large-scale farming, and every environmental condition traditionally blamed for plague outbreaks. And a comparative study of 31 ancient societies across Europe, Asia, and the Americas found democratic and collective governance systems far more widespread than previously assumed, which makes the ancient world messier than the god-king narrative and, Becket argues, probably closer to the truth.
