Description

Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt We speak with journalist, academic and author Steven Thrasher about his new book, "The Overseer Class," in which he explores how members of historically marginalized groups rise to positions of power within institutions in lieu of structural change. He identifies Black police officers as a prominent example of this phenomenon. As public opinion in the United States has grown more critical of law enforcement, "Black cops are kind of rehabilitating police departments, as are women cops and LGBTQ cops," Thrasher says. "Those are the people who I call overseers, the ones who rule between the ruling class and the working class." This concept is so crucial to a unifying principle for how oppression and even internalization of oppression functions in history and presently. It exploits the survival instincts and encourages the fracture of solidarity between and within groups. This happens within all groups and societies as power imbalances cause instability and utilizes our human need for self preservation against our otherwise cooperative nature in environments of low stress or equilibrium socially. Egalitarian methods of behavior are thrown into imbalance as gaming the system becomes safer for individuals than altering the system or when this is impossible. It happens in the individual and more broadly when the threat of violence or being exploited but tolerated (and so allowed to survive) is a viable alternative in the very real need to survive and feel safer. It is often not consciously acknowledged as doing so and repressing the huge amount of cognitive dissonance that comes from recognizing this stark disassociation with self identity would become more and more self destructive.

Just listened to this at DN. I'm in here to watch the full interview. Hearing the part about Obama and Harris I'm nodding my head so hard it might snap off.
