Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt A massive heat dome settled above the eastern half of the United States over the Fourth of July weekend, bringing triple-digit temperatures, disrupting travel and prompting emergency measures for millions of people. At least 25 people died in New Jersey due to extreme heat and humidity, and more than 185 million people — over half of U.S. residents — were under heat alerts over the weekend. This follows a record-shattering European heat wave that's been blamed for thousands of deaths across Spain, France and Germany. Climate scientists say the burning of fossil fuels is the primary cause of global warming and the reason why heat waves are becoming longer, hotter and more frequent. "Global warming is accelerating past thresholds that we used to consider unacceptable," says climate journalist David Wallace-Wells. "There are a lot of questions about why we haven't prepared adequately for these heat waves," says Wallace-Wells, but he argues that it is still possible to retrofit the planet to mitigate the climate catastrophe. Where I live there is at least 1000 times more trees for ground space than concrete and it’s perfect. Rarely too hot and there is always a way to escape when it does hit records. Get rid of the concrete. It can’t absorb the heat like dirt and trees can.

When they published the 1.5 report, I laughed; they are dreaming if they think they will keep it below 3. The magnitude of the disaster about to descend on us is beyond imagining. Never mess with the power of the Universe. Never underestimate human stupidity.

Build several thousand data centers. That should help cool the planet.

I’m luckily living on Vancouver Island in western Canada where the temperature is always comfortable. That said….I can’t find ANYBODY that gives a damn about global warming including friends and family. People just shrug their shoulders so absolutely nothing will ever change. I’m in my late 60s and happy I won’t be around when this entire planet is completely uninhabitable…which won’t be long.

Many have difficulty grasping exponential change instead of linear change. A good way to grasp exponential growth is to picture a large pond in which you like to swim and boat with one water lily on the surface. Tomorrow there will be two of them, and the next day four of them. There will be eight the following day and then sixteen the next. Eventually, one day you will go to the pond and half of it will be covered with the water lilies, but half is still open for you to swim and boat. However, when you come tomorrow the entire pond will be covered in lily pads and you can't go swimming or boating in it any longer.

More than global warming from greenhouse gasses the land is heating up from concrete and asphalt covering land that once held trees, crops, and other plants. Cars, trains, and trucks produce huge quantities of heat, further raising city temperatures. This is how we got to cities with 45 C days for weeks. Cities like Lahore, Phoenix, and New Dehli sometimes reaching 50 C.
