Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt A heat wave is raising temperatures to dangerous levels across much of Europe, just days after a heat wave in North America saw over 3,000 temperature records set. For more, we speak with climate scientist Michael Mann, who warns that heat domes and flooding have nearly tripled since the 1950s. "At some level, this isn't that complicated. You make the planet hotter, you're going to have more frequent and intense heat extremes," says Mann, a professor of environmental science at the University of Pennsylvania. Mann's upcoming book, co-authored with vaccine expert Dr. Peter Hotez, is "Science Under Siege: How to Fight the Five Most Powerful Forces That Threaten Our World." Im old enough to remember what the climate was like in the 70s and anyone who says hot weather is 'just summer' is a moron

The jet stream gets stuck in a wavy pattern and one side has heat domes and forest fires while the other side has storms and floods. It's an alternating pattern of hell or high water.

Also, it probably didn't help to remove trillions of trees (shade, moisture, water-holding) within one hundred years .. tends to dry things out and heat things up just a bit ... 😐

"I was in Geneva yesterday" might not be the best introduction if you want people to fly less

I'm in Germany, and yes, the heat is kinda brutal right now, we had around 37 to 38 °C today (that's around 98 - 100 °F, if I'm not completely mistaken, sorry converting to other units isn't exactly my strongest suite - but it is also levelling out quite fastly as thunderstorms are kind of a regular occurrence around here, I actually just got one starting here, too... European houses overall not having ACs is a bit of a misconception. Yes, old houses usually don't have them (though they are often kind of thick -walled and at least somewhat insulated and take a bit longer to actually warm up in the summer heat) - but new ones often, especially if the home owner applied for KFW or BAFA funds as those usually require high insulation standards and at least some kind of temperature and air quality management. Our ACs are usually just not blasting on "polar temp" mode, we're a bit more passive in using them 😅

One of my favorite quotes: “Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Eventually that debt is paid.” Valery Legasov, Chernobyl chemist, who died a year after the nuclear disaster in 1986.

Michael Mann :The models have been underestimating. The models: We have been overestimating.

20 years ago I had a vivid dream in which everyone lived in cities protected by domes. I wasn't in a city so I had to run from door to door in the sunlight, to avoid being burned.
