Injustice: How Political Pressure Crippled America's Justice Department

Discover why the Biden administration's DOJ hesitated in prosecuting Trump allies and how fear fundamentally eroded critical Justice Department functions preceding January 6th.

Short Summary

  • Identify specific instances of political interference regarding foreign influence allegations against Donald Trump.
  • Detail the political pressure that led to the dramatic rollback of sentencing recommendations for Michael Flynn and Roger Stone.
  • Clarify that institutional scars from Trump’s first term caused significant caution within the DOJ when investigating 2020 election interference.
  • Note that Congressional committee work eventually forced the DOJ to open serious investigations into the fake electors scheme.

This discussion centers on the reporting from Carol Leonnig and Aaron Davis, authors of Injustice: How Politics and Fear Vanquished America's Justice Department. They cover critical internal dynamics showing how Trump’s attacks weakened the institution, leading Attorney General Merrick Garland to prioritize "turning the page" rather than aggressively pursuing high-level conspiracy cases immediately following the 2020 election.

Description

Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt We speak with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Carol Leonnig and Aaron Davis on the day they publish their new book, Injustice: How Politics and Fear Vanquished America's Justice Department, which looks at how the DOJ during the Biden administration was overly cautious in pursuing cases against Trump and his allies over 2020 election interference, the January 6 riot and more. Attorney General Merrick Garland felt it was important to "turn the page from Donald Trump" and not look too closely at abuses of power, says Leonnig, who also stresses many "stubbornly brave people … tried to do the right thing and could not succeed in this institution." The DOJ became a disgrace under Merrick Garland and is now a completely weaponized. He more than anyone else brought us to the disaster of Democracy we have today. Thank God he was not appointed to the Supreme Court.

Garland should have been fired in his first month. Trump should have been in jail.

Unfortunately! Biden didn’t demand that Garland do his dang job. Garland, was a republican that did nothing to charge trump for his crimes.

I worked as a federal prosecutor for over 24 years - What is saw was hand ringing bureaucrats like Garland and AUSAs who would only take on cases that were slam dunks and then have no moral compass or compassion to tell the difference between violent offenders and young black men who had no choice but to become drug dealers based on no family values, no fathers, no alternatives. I see both dems and republicans appoint federal judges who are by and large incompetent and biased and who were selected for political reasons. I used to think other countries were corrupt but we are the worst.
