The "negotiating" Trump is doing with Canada and others shows how bad he is at actually negotiating. If you're negotiating and show that you're perfectly happy to screw over people who have worked with you in good faith for long periods of time, abandon treaties and agreements, and just generally squeeze with whatever bit of leverage you have - why would anyone want to deal with you? You can't negotiate with a rat like that. The world can see it happening and it shows that past cooperation is worthless, promises are worthless, and any signed documents are worthless. Even when Trump leaves it's still going to be a long lingering stain on the US because they've shown they *can* elect someone like that, so anything extending beyond the current administration is now heavily in question, reducing the ability of the US to act in the future.
