Destiny consistently frames the issue of moneyed interests as something limited to corporations or billionaires, but that’s not what a real leftist analysis should focus on. I’m not sure where Seder stands personally, but the real problem is the system itself. When survival is tied to money, it’s inevitable that even ordinary people will resist new development out of self-interest. Another point: when we say something is “too expensive,” what we usually mean is that it isn’t profitable enough. If you believe we should take care of people, why should that be tied to profitability at all? The fact that we need a profit incentive behind every action should raise serious concerns. And for the record, land banking is very much a real phenomenon.

I’m a developer in upstate NY and here is why the super strict zoning laws hurt and also help. First of all having strict laws make it super lucrative if you are able to work with the city and get approval. The shitty part is you create a lot of monopoly type companies because they load local government with friends and fund the campaigns. For example my buddy has his brother as head of zoning and town supervisor in one of my local towns. He was able to build a 150 unit development where no one else would ever be able to in 1000 years.
