Historical Suppression and Revival of Natural Medicine Compounds

Discover how natural remedies, once standard medical practice documented in the 1926 US Dispensatory, were systematically replaced by synthetics, and review 20 powerful compounds that stood the test of time.

Short Summary

  • The 1926 United States Dispensatory showed 75% of medicine relied on natural remedies before a systemic shift toward synthetics began.
  • Modern medicine often treats symptoms by ignoring root causes related to lifestyle, diet, and stress management.
  • The documentary highlights 20 specific natural compounds (like Cod Liver Oil, Lugol’s Iodine, and Niacin) historically used for serious conditions.
  • Pharmaceutical research funding structure incentivizes drugs over researching historical, non-patentable natural treatments.

This discussion unpacks the historical transition away from comprehensive, time-tested natural materia medica toward siloed, singular drug interventions. Understand why historical wisdom is often dismissed as folklore, despite many modern drugs deriving from these initial natural sources.

The 21st edition, published in 1926, was the most authoritative and comprehensive reference for American medicine. At the time of publication, 75% of medicine consisted of various natural remedies, while only 25% consisted of synthetic compounds. Since then, there’s been a gradual transition from natural remedies to synthetic drugs. When the 22nd edition of the book was published in 1943, the ratio of natural to synthetic drugs shifted to 50:50. As kids, we only went to a doctor if we broke a bone. The rest of the time, my mom would treat us with medicinal herbal teas. Thanks mom. I miss you.❤🙏

My grandfather passed away in 2025 at the age of 103. He ate only two meals a day, worked until he was 80, and whenever he was ill, he relied solely on natural medicinal herbs. He lived a joyful and healthy life. Thank you, doctor, for sharing such essential knowledge with everyone.

My Mom was born in 1927. She told me she and her siblings & cousins were never sick as children. They used apple cider vinegar and herbs. There was no such thing as a grocery store until she was 20. She lived to 95.

I’m a registered nurse and have been in conventional medicine for almost a decade. Towards the beginning of my career, I became deathly ill, having severe anaphylactic reactions to foods and severe shortness of breath. I was in my early 20s. Going to conventional medicine specialists did absolutely nothing to help me. That’s when I learned about functional medicine and holistic methods, that is what saved my life. Now I am learning everything I can to open up my own functional coaching business to help others who have had a similar experience. Natural healing is the way to go and sometimes the basics - diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction, and supplements/herbs will do absolute WONDERS. Thank you God for true healers like Dr. Berg.
