After living under uncaring politicians for so long, seeing Gary's concern for everyone's quality of life, is like feeling the first bit of kindness after many years of neglect and mistreatment.
I really do appreciate how Gary has been repeating the same very simple message of taxing wealth over and over again, no matter how much criticism he gets. The more you put it out on the airwaves, the more the message is entrenched and normalised throughout the general public.
Be careful to allow your guest to finish their thoughts before you interject. Brilliant guest and amazing work as always. Nothing but love 💗
I did my Masters with Ha Joon at Cambr 01/02 -really wanting to understand the development challenges of my country South Africa - real life issues. He opened my eyes, changed my life, my contribution to development. I have only respect for him. He is the greatest of academics, of economists, of human beings. Elaine Venter
Ha-Joon Chang must come back to this channel. I feel that there is a lot more to hear from him, understand more about his ideas.
Ha-joon was my professor at uni. The guy had the smallest office in the entire economics department, which was mostly orthodox. One of the few people putting out fresh ideas in the field of development economics. Top lad and great economist, glad you had him on.
"The most revolutionary thing one can do is always to proclaim loudly what is happening." -Rosa Luxemburg
"I think the economists of the Labour government - they're still living in this mental cage developed by Margaret Thatcher" - brilliantly put by Ha-Joon Chang. A great conversation and fantastic guest - many thanks to you both!
I love Ha-Joon Chang’s kind of mischievous laugh at all this absurdity.
What he is saying about just learning math in an Econ program is SPOT ON. I went to NYU (top university in US) and had no clue what I was getting myself into. I chose Econ as it was the closest thing to finance my program offered - I wasn’t in Stern. I graduated and felt I had learned absolutely nothing about real world economics, just how to do complex derivatives that all can be done in a calculator. I wasn’t particularly good at math entering into the program so had to focus all my attention to just learning that aspect. To this day I still despise that program and wouldn’t recommend. Really nice to hear that someone as successful in the industry as him felt the same way.
