My freshman year of high school my best friend died in a car accident, it was two days after Christmas so I didn’t have to go back to school until after her funeral but no one at school really talked about it. We weren’t the most popular kids at school, not that that should matter… anyways, a month later a couple of towns away 3 kids died in a car accident who were cheerleaders & football players & one was a relative to a teacher at our school. Our school did multiple fundraisers & ralleys for those kids from another town, but did nothing for my friend that went to our school. A lot of people were mad at me at the time for saying we shouldn’t do things for kids from another school if we wouldn’t do it for kids from our own. I ended up getting bullied off social media for a few years because people could not believe I was so disrespectful to those kids who died (which I wasn’t at all, I just wanted the same for my friend). All that to say, unfortunately in the Midwest those kind of things do matter to some people..
