The Conjuring (2013) Movie Breakdown: Hidden Details and Real Story Debunked
Uncover the hidden details, cinematic influences, and deliberate script choices that defined The Conjuring's success, then learn shocking facts that debunk the core "true story."
Short Summary
- Pinpoint subtle foreshadowing devices, like the windchime symbolism and the matching kitchen clocks, that enhanced thematic dread.
- Identify cinematic tributes, such as allusions to Poltergeist and The Exorcist, woven into the horror tapestry.
- Contrast the film's supernatural claims (Bathsheba's history, dog's death) with documented historical records, revealing significant creative liberties.
- Note the introduction of major entities and narrative threads that launched the massive Conjuring cinematic universe.
This analysis dissects James Wan's horror structure, highlighting how tension builds through earned scares rather than cheap jump scares. It also critically examines the controversial practices and embellishments used by the real-life paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, providing necessary context for the film’s foundation.

This man Patrick Wilson straight up jumped back and forth from one horror movie universe to another.
I saw The Conjuring in theaters with my brother during summer break when we were 15 and 16 and I remember the closet scene like the back of my hand because a big black guy and his girl were couple of rows in front of us and when she popped up on the closet he yelled “DAMN” everyone in that room laughed their ass off haha
thank you for reminding me of dead silence, that shit was terrifying as a teen
What made this movie so scary was that scary stuff was happening no matter what time of day it was 😂
That one jump scare with the clapping would have been more impressive if they hadn't spoiled it in the trailer.
Homegirl on top of the wardrobe scared the Bejesus out of me😂
The shooting location is a real house that people live in. It’s a beautiful country home in North Carolina. The dock and swamp out back are real. The creepy tree was fake. Also the house didn’t have a basement. If the house looks familiar, it’s been in a LOT of movies. On the same property right next door is a rustic cabin that was used regularly in the series Sleepy Hollow which had been the Sheriff’s cabin. There’s nothing creepy about the place when you’re actually there. It’s amazing how much talent James Wan and team have shown turning this country paradise into a terrifying haunted house.

The characters of the Warrens in these movies and the Warrens IRL are about as far apart as you can get. It’d be similar to making a movie with Bernie Madoff as the protagonist
The £20 reaction is the most British reaction 😂
