yeahhh ... I think you missed the mark on Anna's relationship with her brother. I think when Anna says they were "married in the night" (or something along those lines) it's a euphemism that you're taking too literally. She was abused. Repeatedly. That's it.
A couple of incorrect things 1) The nurse was NOT paid. 2) The parents never approved of the brother raping and "marrying" his sister. That is the entire reason that Anna said mom said she needs to suffer, because "it was Anna's fault" so Anna dying will deliver both Anna and the brother from burning in hell. The only thing that's confusing is why the mom was sneak feeding Anna in the first place, only to refuse to continue doing so once the nurse figured it out. Although, I suppose like the news reporter said - these people could not admit what was going on or they would be prosecuted for fraud and ostracized from their church.
Never seen a movie open and close like the way this one did, super unique! Thanks for all your insight, especially drawing it out to the present, that these stories are still happening and its our job to believe, deep stuff.
Great summary. Although the committee did not pay the nurse if you rewatch the scene.
If the mother wanted her daughter to die in atonement for what happened to the girl's brother, then why was the mother secretly feeding the girl through goodnight kisses all those months, then suddenly decided to stop doing it after the nurse ordered no one get closer to the girl? The nurse later begs the mother to return feeding the girl mouth-to-mouth yet somehow the mother refuses.
The word nān (نان) originated in Iran where it is the generic word for any kind of bread, as in Indian "naan". Suggests to me that she has herself become the manna from heaven, the miraculous sustenance that keeps one alive in the desert
I believe she was taking laudanum, which is basically an opium syrup. So not a hallucinogen, but an opiate. Her reaction is pretty consistent with most film depictions of opium/opiate/heroin use.
Only one thing bothered me about this film: the forced and rushed love story between Elizabeth and the journalist. It would have been more powerful had he helped them without the contrived romance. Not every story needs a romantic sub plot and if you have to do it, do it properly.
I don't think they were actually married I think the brother just called his abuse on her "being married" and she didn't understand that's not what it was.
