apparently malevolent forces were draining energy from a parallel reality, and the stones were installed by higher beings to take that energy and send it back to where it came from. the stones were disassembled and reassembled many times. one side wanted them the others didn't. almost like a parent taking a child's phone, and then saying, ok you can have the phone, but I'm turning off the wi-fi.
