Joe Rogan Experience #2403 - Andrew Gallimore
Neurobiological Exploration of DMT: Constructed Reality, Ancient Intelligence, and Extended Experience
Confront the mysteries of DMT. Learn why this substance forces scientists to rethink consciousness and the very structure of reality, moving discussion beyond simple hallucination theory.
Short Summary
- The waking world is a predictive model actively constructed by the brain, not direct passive observation.
- DMT collapses the standard waking reality model and facilitates the construction of a new, coherent, albeit alien, domain.
- Consistent reports suggest encounters with advanced, non-human intelligence, which Gallimore terms "intelligent agents."
- Novel "DMTX" research utilizes anesthesia infusion techniques to stabilize and explore the visionary state for hours.
Dr. Andrew Gallimore, a chemical pharmacologist and neurobiologist, details why the DMT experience cannot be dismissed as mere hallucination. He presents evidence that the brain builds reality hierarchically (i.e., the Thatcher Effect) and shows how DMT perturbs this system to construct an entirely different world model. The conversation pivots from the neuroscience of perception to the philosophical mystery of interacting with seemingly superior intelligences, concluding with a look at cutting-edge research designed to map this uncharted territory.

No hair was harmed in this episode
I’ve always wondered what blind from birth people would experience on DMT would they see the same entities
Now THIS is JRE, Andrew Gallimore's work is paradigm breaking.
13:50 You can really see why Jamie is the best at what he does. Joe probably gave him the files before the show, and Jamie clearly went through them ahead of time so everything was ready to go. When the topic came up, he pulled up the exact slide instantly without anyone asking. You can tell Andrew was a little surprised to see what he was talking about appear on the screen right away. That kind of awareness is what makes Jamie so good at his job.
more of these kinds of guests, Joe. Please man. these experts on psychedelics always bring great conversations
38 seconds in and we're talking about DMT, gonna be a good pod
I like how Andrew always brings the discussion back to DMT, no matter what Joe is talking about. True passion.
It helped me lose all taste for drugs, it help me quit. No interest in ever doing them again too where as before I struggled hourly wanting to do drugs. It’s a miracle. It’s eye opening. It’s ontologically shocking. It’s comforting yet horrifying. It’s beautiful. It’s real. More real than whatever this reality is suppose to be. Almost like being in a dream and entering DMT realm feels like you’ve finally woken up. I couldn’t recommend it enough, having the experience at least once, to anyone and everyone. Schizophrenia runs in my family and was a deterrence, not allowing me to pursue psychological experiences out of fear. I finally became desperate enough to be freed from my insatiable hunger for narcotics/cocaine that I went and did it anyway. Best decision I will have ever made in my entire life.
I hit a friend's DMT cart thinking it was THC last year and it turned english into the hebrew alphabet on me
As a fan of both Joe and Andrew, I can’t believe I’m only finding out about this episode three months later.
