Description

The College Football Playoff saw JMU and Tulane get blown out by Oregon and Ole Miss, and on Josh Pate's College Football Show Ep 700 Josh Pate delivered his initial reaction. Should we see G5 teams in the College Football Playoff? Could we see an entire separate G5 Playoff structure one day? What do we make of teams like Tulane and James Madison being in the CFP while teams like Notre Dame and Vanderbilt are left out? Make it simple. Take the old BCS formula, take the top 12 teams and let the chips fall where they may. If a G5 team is in the top 12 of the BCS formula, then they are in. Simple

There's another concept from pro soccer that could help bridge the gap: player transfer fees. If P4 schools had to pay G5 schools to get their players in the portal, G5 schools could reinvest into their programs and better compensate their remaining players/coaches and incentivize them to stay. I think that's fair. If a G5 school invested the resources into recruiting and developing someone, they should be entitled to compensation. Btw this happens with real world employment contracts all the time.

I’m not for any playoff selection criteria that factors in media biased preseason rankings. Let the best 12 or 16 teams play based strictly on in season results, regardless of conference championships. No rankings until at least week 8. You don’t get credit for beating overhyped teams in week 1 if they suck after 8 weeks.

It's an invitational, not a playoff. In the latter, one actually plays their way in and entry isn't determined by a biased committee. So either just call this an invitational or create an actual playoff(s) where entry is simply determined on the field.

Criteria for playoff selection definitely needs to be updated and it should have a consistent and measurable metric that is easily pointed to for everyone involved (committee and fans).

We need a Pate composed list of all the different goals being pursued by all the interested parties…in the context of a “fair” or “rational” playoff system…the schools, conferences, and fans…or more if there are any. The pursuit of fairness across all those metrics are NOT the same pursuits. But who gets the final say, is THAT fair, and how is that changed if possible?

Great take and great approach to the debate. I've caked JP out several times but this is excellent logic and presentation.
