The BRUTAL Rise of Aztec Empire & Lost Ancient Civilizations of South America | Luke Caverns • 341
Uncovering the Brutality and Brilliance of Ancient Mesoamerica and Forgotten American Frontiers
Discover how the violent, expansionist Aztec Empire contrasted sharply with their predecessors, explore the surprising origins of Maya civilization fueled by Olmec trade, and learn why the 200 years before the American Revolution are critically understudied.
Short Summary
- Aztec culture was viewed as fundamentally savage and alien by surrounding Mesoamerican groups due to their unique military-state structure and reliance on ritual sacrifice.
- The earliest foundation of Mesoamerica rests with the Olmec culture, which established crucial trade routes for key resources like jade long before the Maya’s peak.
- Luke Caverns details how the Maya civilization arose in the seemingly inhospitable Petén jungle, driven by resource demands from the wealthy Olmec centers.
- Modern American history largely ignores the critical 1500s–1700s period involving Spanish forts, Cherokee power, and the complex realities of life on the Great Plains.
Historian Luke Caverns provides a deep dive into complex pre-Columbian societies, moving beyond simple narratives of conquest. Readers gain insight into the specific mechanisms (like imperial bureaucracy and conquest strategies) that allowed the Aztecs to rapidly dominate the Mexican Valley. Furthermore, the conversation pivots to early North American colonial exploits, emphasizing that the complexity of civilization existed here long before European contact.

My grandpa was an explorer in south America during the 60s out to the 80s. He stumbled over some "insane cities" in his words. Ball courts with pottery some he said looked like they got up and left everything there and never came back. The jungle just grew over it all
I could listen to Luke 3 hours a day every day
Phenomenal and well deserved rapid rise to recognition, Luke. I've listened to you since the early days and it 's always been clear that you'd be 'going somewhere'. Well done, keep up the good work.
It wasn't just the Spaniards; it was also native tribes that hated the Aztecs because they were taken to be sacrificed.
Man gains power man oppresses man all throughout history. We pick and choose which oppressions we favor but nobody is spared.
This was such a good conversation 🔥
