The Dark Secrets of Ed Gein Netflix Didn’t Show
Fact vs. Fiction: Analyzing Netflix's *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* with Expert Harold Schechter
Discover which aspects of the terrifying Ed Gein narrative presented in the Netflix series are historically accurate, and learn why experts dismiss up to 90% of the dramatization as fabrication.
Short Summary
- Determinate that true crime author Harold Schechter believes 90% of the Netflix series contains pure fabrication outside the broad biographical outline.
- Redefine Ed Gein’s criminal classification, confirming he was a grave robber and murderer, but not a conventional "serial killer" driven by sex and sadism.
- Learn the true extent of Gein’s obsession with his deceased mother and how it directly motivated his most notorious acts of mutilation.
This discussion features Jesse Weber consulting with expert Harold Schechter, author of Deviant, to surgically separate the horrific real-life events of Ed Gein from the cinematic liberties taken by the Ryan Murphy series. Understanding this distinction is crucial because this show may serve as the public’s primary introduction to Gein, potentially cementing fictionalized elements as truth.

While the show was based on Ed Gein, it was NOT based on the “true crimes of Ed Gein”. It was based on the LORE of Ed Gein and how it not only created a new genre of horror but reshaped the horror genre altogether. It never claimed to be a documentary.
The show felt more like a love letter to the films he inspired.
A story so disturbing does not need fabrication. I wish they had done a more accurate version
Makes you wonder how many more monsters are out there. The thought is terrifying .
The murder of the nurse didn’t really even happen in the episode, it was just in gein’s mind…
This man seems very annoyed with the Netflix series. lol
Making Ed Gein sound like Patrick Star was certainly a choice.
This show showed the lore and legends about Ed Gein, not the documentary facts. It showed how Gein shaped horror movie genre
