The "politics" started before a ball was even kicked. Iran was denied rights due them as a qualifying nation; a selected referee was banned from taking up his appointment; blatant interference occurred in the case of a local player who deserved the prescribed penalty attached to a red card incident but instead got that suspended so he could continue playing; and a US government representative openly defending at a press event a blatant breach of the rules concerning political statementisingunder the heading of free speech, where the correct stance should have been "no comment". Additionally the FIFA "man of peace" now gets to hand over the trophy at the end of the final, despite two other countries having co-hosted this tournament with their leaders effectively sidelined from this activity. Disgaceful corruption in the extreme....
