Supreme Court Battle Over Racially Biased Congressional Maps

Understand how judicial rulings on racial gerrymandering in Texas could jeopardize minority voting rights nationally and impact future control of the US House.

Short Summary

  • A Trump-appointed judge panel invalidated Texas’s hastily redrawn congressional map for relying predominantly on race (racial gerrymandering).
  • This ruling temporarily halts efforts by Republicans to gain up to five new House seats before the midterms.
  • The case now moves to the US Supreme Court, where precedent suggests hostility toward Section Two of the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
  • This conflict highlights a national trend of mid-decade redistricting attempts aimed at solidifying political power through voter dilution.

The discussion breaks down the legal context of the Texas ruling, emphasizing the distinction between permissible partisan gerrymandering and illegal racial gerrymandering under existing federal law. Readers will gain insight into the stakes involved as the Supreme Court prepares to potentially weaken crucial VRA protections.

California's prop 50 wasn't based on race. It was also voted on and not gerrymandered.

This wouldn't even be going before the Supreme Court now if they hadn't already enabled this fascist crook for years

As a Texan... I was never asked how I felt about the redistricting that restricts Texas voters. None of us were. Hopefully they screwed themselves by trying.

Trump wouldn’t be doing this if he wasn’t scared.

When you aren't working for the people, you have to rig the system without all the states voting for change.

Chief Justice Roberts has not supported the VRA and has not supported the rights of Black Americans against discrimination

The big difference between Texas and California is the redistricting ( red istricting) done in Texas was done by politicians and the redistricting that’s going to be done in California was a choice given to and chosen by the Voters.

Well I am from California and we voters approved our new maps, that oughta count for something 😂
