Trump SUED and BANNED by States amid ICE SCHEME

Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act was created in 1996 to allow federal and local law enforcement to cooperate on immigration matters. Under Trump's second term, however, it has expanded dramatically, turning local police departments into extensions of ICE. The number of agreements grew from 135 in late 2024 to more than 2,000 by mid-2026, with roughly one-third of Americans now living in participating counties. The federal government covers salaries, equipment, and vehicles, giving local agencies strong financial incentives to join. Critics argue the program raises serious constitutional concerns, particularly through street-level stops based on minor infractions that can become pretexts for investigating immigration status. Because unlawful presence is a civil violation, not a crime, civil rights groups warn the program encourages discriminatory policing and unlawful searches. Lawsuits are mounting, and at least nine states have banned participation altogether.
