Attorneys Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian cover the 94-page ruling by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ordering Trump's name stripped from the Kennedy Center within 14 days. Congress named the institution the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts through Public Law 88-260 in 1964, one year after JFK's assassination. Trump's handpicked board voted to rename it the "Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts" in December 2025. Judge Cooper wrote that the statute makes the institution's name "crystal clear" and that "Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it." He also temporarily blocked the board's plan to close the center for two years of renovations, calling the vote "ill-informed and seemingly preordained" and noting that none of the board members had sufficient information to make a well-considered decision. The ruling was issued on what would have been JFK's birthday. Trump blasted Cooper as an "anti-Trump hater" and called the court system "rigged," then appeared to wash his hands of the whole project.
