You know what I love seeing? The entire cast and crew treating this as an honor, not an obligation. There's so much positivity surrounding this show and the joy is infectious.
For the first time that I can remember, the way the actors conducted themselves has actually convinced me to watch this. They are humble and actually look like they are actually enthusiastic about creating something for the fans. It's a damn shame that this is so rare.
That intro with Luffy is so refreshing!! An actor who is grateful and happy about playing such a positive character. We haven't seen that from Hollywood in a long time. The greatest thing about this show is that it's not your usual jaded, cynical, nihilistic crap. This show is unabashedly whimsical and good at heart. It's what the world needs more of.
im gonna be that guy, the reason the live action is soo good is because we had eichiro oda on the show along with cast who truely admire and love one piece
When your lead actor tears up at a compliment from the creator, you know there's real emotion in the show.
Gary going from not interested in OP, to expecting the worst from Netflix, to loving it, is truly an arc worth of the best animes.
You are 100% right, respecting the source material is part of why this show was so good. The other was the fact they only used CG for impossible effects like the rubber, Buggy, etc. They built almost all of the ships and sets in the show. And it just makes everything more believable. Seeing a real Going Merry just draws you into the world.
Also shoutout to Matt Owens and Steve Maeda that condensed 1200 mins worth of storytelling while adding a storyline from way later in the story into less than 7 hours seamlessly
22:28 I keep thinking about the scene of Nami asking Luffy for help. Oda really didn't hold back in his writing. Throughout the season we had been introduced to this strong female character, only to find out that beneath the surface she was barely holding together. For years she had been carrying the burden of trying to save her loved-ones by first being enslaved and working herself to the ground, then stealing and betraying everyone she met, making her unable to form any real friendships. Then she finds out that it was all for nothing and there was never any hope to begin with. She is broken mentally and even starts stabbing herself in her desperation and lashes out against Luffy when he tries to stop her. Her last resolve was to at least ensure the Strawhats wouldn't be dragged down with her, but Luffy sees right through her. Then as she hits rock-bottom she can finally be true to herself: "Luffy, help me!" Luffy doesn't answer right away, but instead places his hat on her head. The hat, which we have learned, is his greatest treasure and represents his dream of becoming the king of the pirates. "Of course I will." From now on I will be much more invested in both Luffy and Nami as characters and this scene of Nami showing weakness has in fact strengthened both of them! Hollywood writers need to look at this and take note of how to write compelling characters. After seeing them broken down, it is much more satisfying when we see them overcome their past weakness - simple but effective.
Seeing how enthusiastic and honored the cast are to be portraying these characters is just as good as the show itself.
