Why They Hate The Lord of the Rings - The Scouring of Tolkien
Academic Critique and Cultural Defense of J.R.R. Tolkien
Examine the specific academic and media assaults targeting J.R.R. Tolkien’s works under the guise of decolonization. Discover the speaker’s argument that this conflict represents a broader cultural war over narrative ownership rather than genuine scholarly review.
Short Summary
- Academic modules claim Tolkien's treatment of characters reflects ethnic chauvinism and anti-African antipathy.
- The launch of Amazon's Rings of Power reignited and energized activist critiques against the source material.
- The speaker contends that attempts to "decolonize" Tolkien are actually attempts to deconstruct and destroy his established mythology.
- Global sales figures and enduring popularity demonstrate that these academic critiques reside within a vocal, yet small, minority.
This segment dissects recent criticisms leveled against J.R.R. Tolkien stemming from courses like "Decolonizing Tolkien" at the University of Nottingham. The speaker contrasts these modern interpretations with Tolkien's own stated intentions and historical context, particularly noting the influence of corporate adaptations like The Rings of Power. Ultimately, the discussion frames these actions as an ideological battle against Tolkien’s conservative, English-centric worldview.

I'm glad that Peter Jackson made LOTR when he did.
They hate it because it will forever be better than anything they make. We all know the quote.
The fact that they constantly compare orcs to black people and call us racist for this non existent comparison is insane
I'm mexican. My skin color is relatively dark. And I don't need or want to "watch myself" reflected in the characters of LOTR because I'm not an imbecile. The values that Talkien talks about are universal and timeless. Things like courage, integrity, strenght, friendship and love for all that is good and beautiful speak to all of us.
“Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have intended or made.” J.R.R Tolkien
We were so fortunate that Jackson was a real fan
The fact that they see a fantasy race of inherently evil creatures and immediately assume it's about minorities says more about them than it does Tolkien.
Devout Catholic? Proud Englishman? Distrusts Government? Well, we can´t have that, can we?
As a mexican myself, I have never once in my entire life watching LOTR thought that the orcs, goblins, etc were representations of me or any real culture/people. I took them as they were twisted and vile monsters that served the forces of evil. Most of all I saw the values of valor, strength, hope, and even love and have kept them with me ever since I was a boy. For that reason I still love the series and always will.
They keep telling us we have No Culture. But they are doing there best to erase it. Wake Up Folks.🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧
