Imagine if Snyder had immediately quit the industry after Watchmen. He would have had a proper legacy. Now he is synonymous with awful filmmaking.

My favorite part of Star Wars, A New Hope, is when our heroes are traveling to Yavin 4 after escaping the Death Star and Han sits everyone down and says, "Okay, here's my backstory, I'm a scoundrel, can't be trusted, and..."
