Aircraft technicians and airframe and power plant mechanics can face prison time for mistakes leading to accidents. That could be a deterrent.

One advantage to working as an Aircraft Maintenance Tech, is there is no Federally 'forced' retirement age, where by contrast most (common carrier) Airlines require Flight-line Pilots' to retire by their 65th birthday
