ABC pulls Jimmy Kimmel, plus Bill O’Reilly, Ro Khanna and Joe Manchin | CUOMO Full Episode 9/17
Kimmel's Suspension, Social Media Liability, and Political Hypocrisy
Analyze ABC's decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel over comments on Charlie Kirk’s assassination and debate where liability—for media giants or social platforms—should ultimately rest.
Short Summary
- Corporations like ABC face public opinion and financial consequences (goodwill) for employee speech.
- Current law (Internet Decency Act) grants social media platforms like X (Twitter) broad immunity that traditional media lacks.
- Politicians flip-flop on free speech enforcement based purely on whether they are in or out of power.
- Congressman Ro Khanna advocates for updating Section 230 and implementing the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) to curb harmful algorithmic pushes.
This segment analyzes the fallout from Jimmy Kimmel’s comments regarding the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk, contrasting the accountability faced by traditional media outlets versus digital platforms. Experts debate whether the legal framework needs urgent updating to address algorithmic manipulation and radicalization fueled by unchecked online speech.

Nobody said that what Jimmy did was illegal. But an employer has a right to do what they want with an employee.
You have the freedom to say what you want, but you don't have freedom from the consequences of what you say.
Cuomo you're not giving an entire picture
They got Tucker fired for just his speech. You didn't complain then
I will be canceling watching Disney and ABC
I am in my 60s and worked since I was 14. Any place I worked had a clause that if we did anything outside of work to embarrass them, we got fired
15:32 I have no idea what Cuomos going on about. It has nothing to do with this thing with Jimmy Kimmel. Also, social media is not the same as national television. There’s just no comparison. For the most part in social media, people represent themselves and have the ability to make their own choices whereas Jimmy Kimmel works for a corporation. He represents that corporation and he can be held accountable for his choices
There was a point where I really like Cuomo but for a while now he's been off I don't know what happened to him
The problem isn't social media, it's education
Great conversation. Thank you for modeling how we can talk about issues from two different perspectives. We need more of this in the United States
