Watched this show many times, and I've only just realised that Emma telling Jean that their plan is to release the Phoenix from Jean and let it fade away naturally because they believe psychic beings need a host to survive was already (sort of) set up by the Shadow King episode, wherein Emma defeats the Shadow King by depriving him of a host for long enough to destroy him.

The thing is, villain era Magneto WAS pretty darn evil and the Claremont run didn’t shy away from it either. It’s what made his redemption hit because HE realised how far he’d gone

The imagery of the Phoenix as a tiny canary in a cage, only to imediately become a raging inferno when the tiny cage is opened, is maybe my favorite visual of the entire series. I wish you hadn't had skipped it
