Half of Argentina and Brazil will be devastated by this
My understanding is if you had a parent or grandparent with Italian citizenship/ born in Italy, you can still qualify for citizenship by descent.
I did not want to move to Italy anyway. The taxes there can be a nightmare with tons of red tape. I have an American friend who inherited an estate in Italy from her Italian father wh was a surgeon. She has had a very difficult time there with her inheritance both land and money. She speaks Italian, has lived there and decided to abandon the whole situation.
It’s too early to call this pathway dead. There will be a number of challenges to this emergency decree in the coming months and years to keep this pathway open to prevent the Italian government from stripping millions of citizens of their right to being recognized as Italian citizens. I think it won’t be possible to retroactively remove these rights. Going forward, I agree that it’s a sign of changes to come and that you should try to claim your citizenship now while you still can and your chances of passing Italian citizenship to your children is going to become a lot harder. I am fortunate I filed my application one month before the change and should not be affected but I feel bad for all of those who are now in the lurch.
10 years ago, Italy issued my passport (CBD). I would no longer qualify as it was via my great grandfather. Glad I made it a priority back then!
Citizenship rules are changing fast—and Italy’s latest move is just one example. If you have ancestry from another country or want a second passport, now is the time to take action. I can not believe people didn't take opportunities like this. This has never been an option for me, but if it had I would have done it asap
I am from NY. I got my Italian passport in 2010. In those days it took over a year to get an appointment at the consulate so I moved to New Orleans, to be in the jurisdiction of the Houston consulate. I called for an appointment. They asked, " How is Thursday? " Go where there are fewer Italians to get served quicker.
I obtained Italian citizenship in 2019 after a three year wait for an appointment at my local American consulate. I plan on retiring there with my Argentinian/Italian wife and daughter.
Italy’s already collapsing birth rates will get even worse by this
